LGBTQ History is Taking Over!

LGBTQ history is taking over! (as we think it should be!)

You'll see FMA everywhere this fall! And while we are still a couple of months away from LGBTQ History Month, we have already started creating exciting events, programs, and exhibitions. Our goal is for everyone to see and know that the LGBTQ community has deep roots in KY—spanning generations—and that it belongs unequivocally in the rich tapestry of Kentucky's history and future.

This fall, we will also be celebrating FMA's 10th Birthday! Make sure to stay tuned and join us as we share Kentucky's LGBTQ history throughout the next few months! We can't wait to share it all with you.

Introducing FMA's Newest Exhibition!

🖤 Queer Gear: Clothing from LGBTQ+ Kentuckians 🖤
🖤 August 15 - October 23 🖤
🖤 @ UK’s Bill Gatton Student Center 🖤
(outside of the Harris Ballroom)

From buttons and t-shirts to leather and lace, clothing acts as a way for the LGBTQ+ community to express themselves and their queerness. One’s fashion choices can affirm identity and critique the status quo. Clothing lives in a uniquely liminal space, expressing the inextricable link between the public and private, the individual and collective, and our intimate and civic lives. Clothing is a visual cue to subtly, or not so subtly, signal queerness to others. Differences in dress can be seen as deviant and call into question social norms. By publicly displaying garments from queer Kentuckians, Queer Gear celebrates the vibrant and eclectic histories that these objects tell. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Co-curated by Miriam Kienle and Josh Porter, Queer Gear features clothing from the Faulkner Morgan Archive. Exhibition text contributed by Borealis, Pascalle LeRoy, Kiana White, Sophie DeCorte, Andrew Hahn, Rae Bruce, Christopher Steffan, and Cate Wollert.

Listen to us on LexTV!

We were honored when Councilmember Liz Sheehan reached out to us about highlighting the work of the Faulkner Morgan Archive during a "Council Comments" segment on LexTV. We talked about who we are, what we do, and how people can take part in our mission of sharing Kentucky's LGBTQ History!

2024 Kentucky History & Genealogy Conference

Last week, we were invited to speak at the 2024 Kentucky History & Genealogy Conference. We had a wonderful time giving an overview of Kentucky's LGBTQ History! Queer Kentuckians have made such a strong impact on the history of our Commonwealth, and we love to share their stories.

Here, Black, Femme, & Queer @ Bolivar Art Gallery

Our traveling exhibition Here, Black, Femme, & Queer will be traveling to the Bolivar Art Gallery at UK's School of Art and Visual Studies! This is an exhibition on the lives and legacies of Black, femme, & queer people from right here in Kentucky. This iteration will be the first time that original archival materials will be on display alongside reproductions!

It will be on display from August 31 to September 27.

Coming 2025

We are so so so excited and grateful to be one of the 18 organizations chosen to receive a 250Lex Cultural Grant!

The money from this grant will be used to create the first comprehensive exhibition of Lexington’s LGBTQ history, showcasing the importance of the queer community in this city. Coming 2025, this exhibition will be able to travel to venues across the city, county, and state. We look forward to celebrating 250 years of LGBTQ history in Lexington!
